Five Tips for Choosing the Perfect Paint Color

A room with a bright red accent wall, large windows and doors with white painted trim.

Read below for five tips to help you choose the perfect paint color.

1. The power of a fresh coat of paint:

Over time it is easy to lose interest in making updates and efforts to refresh the home. Repainting a room is a relatively fast and easy way to transform your surroundings, and breathe new life into a space. Whether you experiment with a completely different color, or look to the same color that you’ve loved for years, a freshly painted room will be an instant update.

2. Daring to go bold:

You’ve always used neutral colors in your home, and now you want to experiment with color. Many customers are daunted by this notion, but by taking small steps to become more comfortable with a bright or dark color, experimenting becomes far more approachable. Remember, even a little bit of a bold color can go a long way to bring your color personality into a room. For instance, if you have a built-in book case try painting the back of the shelves in a deep color to accentuate items displayed on the shelves, or paint a small piece of furniture making it new again.

3. Update your kitchen with color:

One of the most popular ways to revitalize a kitchen is by painting kitchen cabinets. As opposed to a complete kitchen renovation, painting your cabinets in a color that works with existing elements like countertops or tile will give the feel of a complete overhaul without embarking on a construction project. This will do wonders to make the home feel more updated and refreshed.

4. Use samples to select with confidence:

Making a final color selection from a small sample can be tricky, but by using Benjamin Moore’s pint samples that are available in all of our colors the process becomes much easier. By painting out a sample on a piece of poster board you now have a large sample that will provide a great representation of the color, and it will also help in understanding how a color reacts to the natural and artificial lighting in the home.

5. Consider the natural light in your home throughout the day:

Are you painting a room that has abundant natural light, or is the amount of natural light in the room limited? By understanding the way the light moves through the home, paired with some basic “rules of thumb” working with light can be easier to manage. If your room has lots of natural light and is south-facing, many colors will look great and tend to have a warm and glow. Northern light tends to be cooler, so rather than force a warm color to work, it is often best to use a color on the cooler side of the color wheel (blues, greens) and then bring in warmth through artificial lighting.
